Two more now confirmed war crimes to add to Bush’s tally

Despite a complete media blackout on the story in Canada, the U.K. and the United States, the dean of the U.S. White House Press Corps, Hellen Thomas, recently received a great deal of online attention for daring to state the obvious.  By most accounts, the attention began on the popular social networking site, which managed to raise several thousand dollars to send Ms. Thomas flowers for what was seen as her daring question for White House Press Secretary Dana Perino.

The ‘obvious’ thing that Thomas pointed out is, of course, that revelations of evidence (both photographic and otherwise) of the use of WWII-era torture techniques as well as evidence that U.S. President George W. Bush personally signed off on approving torture, necessarily means that President Bush lied when he said the U.S. does not torture.

However, even this somewhat subdued (yet obviously true) fact, has been met with a virtually complete media blackout.  One could even push the envelope even further in this matter though, and if North America had a critical press, Ms. Thomas’s question would not have been seen as either particularly extreme or controversial.  Rather, on the contrary, if Ms. Thomas wanted to be even more accurate, she could have also pointed out — with equal confidence — that these recent revelations on torture means that George W. Bush is, by definition, a war criminal and that this is but merely one of two items which came to light in the past two weeks which constitute war crimes on the part of the U.S. President.

The other revelation, which was covered somewhat in the mainstream press, was the revelation that U.S. President Bush blessed (and assisted through military aid) the expansion of the illegal Jewish settlements in Palestinian occupied territory.  Of course, acquiring lands through conquest constitutes not only a war crime but constitutes what Robert H. Jackson, chief prosecutor for the United States at the Nuremberg Trials, claimed was the “supreme” war crime.  This latter fact, yet again, was not mentioned in the mainstream media in North America or the U.K..

So, if you’re keeping track:  that’s two war crimes revealed in as many weeks.  The press has not only glossed over both revelations, but to the extent that Helen Thomas’s rather subdued and tame question about lying (rather than war crimes) has been addressed online or elsewhere, it has been treated as somehow radical.  Don’t get me wrong: Thomas deserves the utmost credit for posing her question in a forceful manner, but let’s not kid ourselves here — the lying is nowhere near as bad as the war crimes.

Awfully young for having the audacity to lie to not only Helen, but to the entire world! Thanks for vid. I had to watch it twice.

Another reason why I like living in Germany: our press tells it like it is. Americans turn around and whine that the German press is anti-American, but it’s not that. They’re just report the rest of the story. If you want to see a great example of what I mean, google: David’s Medienkritik – I won’t provide any link love for that site, sorry.

Paul: these war crimes and the many others that will come to light — hopefully — in coming years aren’t the real issue. Unfortunately the real issue here is that the Unites States committed war crimes while carrying out at least one — Iraq — useless and unnecessary war. It did this to bolster its hold on superpowerdom. What it actually accomplished was to speed up the country’s slide into the land of has-beens. What is scary for me as a Canadian, is how this country will be viewed by the rest of the world. Are we a US toady. Or are we a reluctant neighbor.
    We’re a bit of both I think.

Ken. I hate to hear you say that about Canada. And why is that? Because you’re right dammit.

Ken, well put. I agree completely.

Actually there’s a section in the Nuremberg trials wherein it was argued that the supreme war crime (the crime of aggression and the acquisition of lands through conquest) is so heinous because in encompasses all of the other crimes that occurred because of it. So the perpetrators of the initial war crime actually should have a lot more to answer to. For example, every non-combatant civilian killed, every Iraqi teenage girl raped, every artifact from the Iraqi Museum embezzled is, in the Nuremberg sense, on Bush’s head because he criminally set the circumstances in motion which caused each of these things even if none of them were directly ordered by him.

There is no law except the law of the jungle. Laws are written and enforced by those with the power to do so.

If Hitler had won, there would have been no Nuremburg trials, and the laws and villians would be completely different.

Bush and company enjoy power, therefore no law can be relevant to them.

I think what they are doing is terrible, and ultimately stupid, and I think Bush and company should hold themselves to a higher moral standard, but it just nver seems to be the way it goes, does it?

I think you all who judge, who have never had to make a decision relating to national defense, who know nothing about military matters, and who at the sametime celebrate Noam Chomsky(exucsed atrocities of he Khmer Rouge)and wear Che Guevara(mass murderer) shirts, should check your holier than thou crap at the door.

The facts are war is a nasty business. If I have to run over you or anyone else to protect my country, MY FAMILY, i’ll do to.

And how can there be “crime” when the laws are never enforced?? You people live in a fantasyland and not the real world, which is why no thinking person takes you seriously.

Noam Chomsky has never excused the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge. In fact, quite the opposite: he’s blasted their atrocities in the most withering terms. This is why he’s one of the few people who actually OBJECTED to the U.S. sending aid to the Khmer Rouge and fighting to give them diplomatic legitimacy even after they’d been overthrown.

I suggest you read something of his before you actually make silly charges like that.

Oh, and P.S. the laws against torture have been enforced. In addition to the Tokyo and Nuremberg Trials, they have also been enforced in other contexts since.
